The new DOE regulations Obama is proposing are so onerous that the manufacturers say dishwashers will no longer be able to clean dishes in a single cycle. This is kind of already true due to the changes that were demanded in detergents a few years ago but things are about to get worse if the new rules are implemented.
companies like GE Appliances & Lighting and Whirlpool Corp., tweaked their models to comply with the DOE’s December proposal to ratchet up standards.
They then ran standard tests with food stuck to dishes.
“They found some stuff that was pretty disgusting,” McAver said.
Supposedly this is being justified as some sort of climate change measure since it is a well known scientific fact that doing dishes by hand will cool the earth. Trust me on this. It is a kind of cargo cult belief where if you build something that looks like a control tower a plane will come and land by it. Here if you do your dishes by hand the earth will cool.
The feds won’t be happy until we are all back doing everything by hand and living in poverty. Of course, on the bright side, the crappy fluorescent bulbs make it harder to see the crap that doesn’t flush down your low flow toilet. The LED bulbs are better but cost about what someone making minimum wage earns in an hour. Previously incandescent bulbs were maybe $0.10 ea and even a fast food worker could buy 70 of them after an hour serving surly customers at the drive-thru window.
Penury sneaks up on us in lots of different ways. For instance I wonder how this changeover is counted in inflation statistics? Light bulbs may cost 50 times what they once did but I bet this doesn’t officially register as inflation because it is a different sort of bulb altogether and, perversely, the prices of LED bulbs coming down probably has the opposite effect on the inflation index.
Anyway, here is a link to Amazon’s current lineup of dishwashers if you don’t fancy using the dish towel. When they changed the washer and dryers over the last time around to the front loaders I had an extra set of the previous types in reserve and they let me get through until most of the bugs were worked out of the new ones. They are still expensive as heck but at least you don’t have to replace them every other year like you did immediately after the change.
